This piece is an exploration of the power that words and opinions can have on those that survive trauma. More than actions, the impact of good advice and kind intentions, becomes heavily weighted when one is striving to establish a normal existence amidst the chaos of trauma recovery. For the newly recovered, the deluge of voices can be overwhelming. One’s very existence has come into question, and to move on, one must pick and choose what one needs to survive. For those that have successfully moved on, the wash of words has become internalized. The chorus of advice has become part of the fabric of their lives.

Here the image is of a newbie being welcomed into the ranks of older survivors. Not all have survived, but even they provide a form of guidance when picking one’s way through the cloud of new experiences. Those that have gone before have found the bits and pieces they need to keep and painted away the rest. away.
